Sacramento launched its bus-mounted traffic camera program last week, becoming the first city in the country to use the technology to issue citations to drivers who park or drive in bus and bike lanes.
As Damien Newton explains in Streetsblog California, “While other cities are using the technology to enforce bus-only lanes, Sacramento has beaten the competition as the first to expand to bike lanes as well.”
City officials said the program will enhance safety for bicyclists and keep buses more reliable. “For now, motorists violating the bike lane will only receive warnings. On June 13, the warnings will end and tickets will be given.” The tech is installed on 100 city buses.
The cameras capture video of violations and the offender’s license plates and send the information to the city for review. The technology was made legal by a 2023 California state law, AB 361.
