2016 saw a 25 percent increase in bikeshare trips over the previous year, continuing a five-year trend of rapid growth, according to the National Association of City Transportation Officers.
Bikeshare continues to grow in the United States, both in number of systems and in number of trips. The National Association of City Transportation Officers (NACTO) reports that the number of bikes available is also growing to keep up with increasing demand.
Besides growing, the industry is also changing as it grows and rolling out in more markets, 24 percent of bikeshare programs now include discounted passes for lower income users. Some programs now also use smart bikes. "The popularity of smart bikes—which incorporate all of the necessary electronic components into the bike itself as opposed to the dock—has significantly increased since the first smart bike systems launched in the U.S. in 2014." NACTO reports.
