An amateur archaeologist has taken modern technology to dig into history, unearthing the roads built by Romans over 2,000 years ago in England.
Jason Sayer of The Architect's Newspaper reports on the work of amateur archaeologist David Ratledge using LIDAR (a laser based radar used for surveying) to track down long hidden roads built by the Romans for the movement of soldiers around England.
The Roman roads were a feat of engineering, as displayed in Sayer's article, following a straight path between points across long distances utilizing beacons placed on high points to help guide the road builders. Ratledge's work sheds light on Roman trade routes across England as well as where the rapid deployment of troops might be necessary.
