Several port commissioners said that an arena could be built south of the Giants' new ballpark at Third and King streets. The port's 1997 waterfront plan mentions a sports arena as a permitted use on port land, but an arena of more than 22,000 seats would require approval by voters. Any proposal for a new arena is certain to encounter opposition, especially if it involves taxpayer money.
