San Francisco's Mayor and port commissioners are considering building a sports arena on the waterfront near Pacific Bell Park.
Several port commissioners said that an arena could be built south of the Giants' new ballpark at Third and King streets. The port's 1997 waterfront plan mentions a sports arena as a permitted use on port land, but an arena of more than 22,000 seats would require approval by voters. Any proposal for a new arena is certain to encounter opposition, especially if it involves taxpayer money.
