The innovative car share company has the green light for a year long pilot project in the city of Chicago.
"The City Council [in March] gave Car2Go, the largest one-way car sharing service in North America, the green light to launch a 500-car experiment on the streets of Chicago," reports Fran Spielman.
Mary Wisniewski also covered the City Council's approval of the Car2Go pilot project back in March.
"Car2Go allows members to pick up a car parked somewhere within a designated zone, use it for a trip and then park it somewhere else in the zone," exoplains Wisniewski. "This 'free-floating' model differs from other rental car or car-share businesses like Zipcar, which requires that a car be picked up from and returned to the same spot." Car2Go already operates in Vancouver, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and Brooklyn, adds Wisniewski.
Fast forward to June, and Car2Go officials have finally announced a launch date for service: Jul 25. "The pilot program will support a network of 400 'affordable, eco-friendly vehicles' — including smart fortwos, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Mercedes Benz CLA models — and is expected to run through June 30, 2019," according to an article by Chris Teale.
