Empowering cycling in Dallas is not about appeasing hipsters. It’s about making a more healthy equitable city, Krista Nightengale argues in an op-ed for the Dallas Morning News.

Dallas may be getting a dockless bikeshare system. Some in the city see bike issues as a distraction but Krista Nightengale of the Better Block Foundation argues that bike transit is an issue of equity. "According to Nerdwallet, it cost about $8,469 a year to own and maintain a car in 2017. The average operating cost of a bicycle is $308. No insurance. Little maintenance. Big savings," Nightengale writes in the Dallas Morning News.
Besides being inexpensive, bike transit has positive health outcomes. "It appears Dallas views bicycling in three ways — for the poor, for the hipsters and for exercise — whereas many parts of the world view cycling as a form of transportation," Nightengale argues.
