One of the most astute observers of San Francisco provides a list of notable architecture project to locate the city amidst all its ongoing controversies and challenges.
San Francisco Chronicle Architecture John King looks for lessons about the City by the Bay for lessons written in the city's architecture. "If there was a common theme to San Francisco architecture in 2017 — the structures built or brought back to life — it’s that with money, all things are possible and that the city’s ills can be tackled in part by thoughtful design," writes King.
Included on the list (not a "best of" list, explains King, but "a subjective survey of 10 buildings and one public space that speak to the San Francisco of today") are examples of modest housing developments that had to win approval in court, a 55-story building playing second fiddle to the behemoth Salesforce Tower, a homeless services center in the hip neighborhood of Dogpatch, a bridge built for buses, and "formulaic infill" that responds to the desires of the planning department.
