Development plans along the Expo Line need more density, affordable housing to achieve city goals

Planning for development around Expo Line stations leaves much to be desired, according to the Times Editorial Board. Eric Garcetti, mayor of Los Angeles, wants to add 275,000 housing units to the city by 2035, with two-thirds of them near transit stops. However, the Expo Line Transit Station Plan's five station areas only call for up to 6,000 new housing units.
The editorial recognizes that much of the existing station areas consist of single-family homes, but questions whether they should remain off limits to intensification. Most of all, these station areas should accommodate significant new affordable housing development.
