"Now, enormous construction costs and a ballooning regional focus on locating jobs and houses near transit, has caused BART to evaluate its extensions in terms of smart growth standards. Compact, higher density development around stations delivers more riders than their suburban stations, which rely heavily on huge parking lots to supply passengers.It's a matter of economics: The more riders, the more cost-effective the new service."
