Though the federal government approved the plan for toll lanes, called managed lanes in Illinois, the state lacks the funding to implement the idea. Two toll lane proposals are currently in limbo.
"The federal government has given the green light to the state of Illinois to put in toll lanes on the Eisenhower Expressway, but the project won’t get underway anytime soon," reports Bernie Tafoya.
As reported by Greg Hinz in November 2016, the state of Illinois has proposed a "managed lane" in both directions of the Eisenhower. Now that the federal government has approved the plan in concept, some large barriers remain. According to Tafoya, "the state does not have the $2.7 billion needed to make the project a reality."
The news about the Eisenhower Expressway breaks in the context of a similar plan for the Stevenson Expressway (I-55). The latter has stalled in the Illinois Legislature, much to the dismay of Illinois Bruce Governor.
