Josh Cohen shares news of the Bicycle Friendly State program, the work of the League of American Bicyclists.
The program includes a ranking of all 50 states, based on policies, programs, and other efforts by public agencies to plan and implement bicycling facilities.
Cohen digs into the plan by focusing specifically on the efforts of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), which set a goal in 2012 to triple statewide rates of transit, walking, biking. To achieve those goals, MassDOT is updating its Statewide Bicycle Transportation Plan, funding a complete streets program, and implementing past initiatives like the Healthy Transportation Compact and the Bay Street Greenway Priority 100. That work earned the state the fourth spot on the 2015 ranking, behind Washington, Minnesota, and Delaware.
