A report from HousingNOLA about efforts to create and preserve affordable housing in New Orleans finds reasons to celebrate and reasons to keep working on the challenge.
"Less than a year after housing advocates pledged to work with Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s administration to create an additional 3,000 'affordable housing opportunities' in New Orleans by 2018, the city is more than halfway to that goal," reports Jessica Williams.
That information comes from a report released last week by HousingNOLA, which gave the city an overall grade of "B" for its affordable housing issues.
"Almost 2,000 affordable housing units have been created or preserved in the past year, the report says," adds Williams. "What's more, city officials have either completed or are working on several steps that could reduce housing costs for other New Orleanians, it says."
The report docked the city because of increasing numbers of residents spending more than 30 percent of their income on rent.
