Op-Ed: Prospective Zoning Best Tool for Maine's Unorganized Territories

In an area where only one percent of the land is zoned for development, prospective zoning can maintain the balance between land conservation and growth.

As Maine's state government looks to lessen restrictions on growth and development in the Unorganized Territories, concerns about long-term impacts arise.

This editorial makes the case for using prospective zoning to designate ares appropriate for development. The author argues that weakened restrictions will not allow the state to maintain the balance between its dichotomous roles of fostering economic growth and conserving land and water.

While subdivision proposals have subsided in the Unorganized Territories, a proactive zoning approach will demonstrate its value in the long term.
