International Bike Count: Spain's Ridership Growing Fastest

Between 2014 and 2015, Spain led 16 other countries by increasing its bicycle mode share the most—8 percent.

"Bike traffic rose by 3 percent, or 4.6 million trips, between 2014 and 2015 across the dozens of cities, states and countries where France-headquartered Eco-Counter has installed sensors," reports Jen Kinney.

Eco-Counter has 1,490 sensors, located in 17 countries. According to the "2015 Eco-Counter Worldwide Cycling Index," which counts bicycles at the location of each of the sensors between 2014 and 2015, Spain led those 17 countries "as the country with the greatest growth in cycling mode share last year with an increase of 8 percent over the year before."

Kinney provides additional data from the count for each of the 17 countries (including the United States and Canada) where Eco-Counter sensors are installed.
