To Understand New York's Needs, Think Beyond Manhattan

When most people think of New York City, says CUNY planning professor and activist Tom Angotti, they think of Manhattan. This excessive focus on a narrow slice of the greater New York metropolitan area needs to be reconsidered.

The New York City metropolitan area houses 20 million people; a minority of these live in the five boroughs. Despite this, however, discussion around the city's needs is dominated by the region's most celebrated island. To meet the difficult challenges facing this huge and diverse area in the coming decades, however, we need to start paying more attention to the big picture, argues Tom Angotti in an interview with Satellite.

He touches on the implications of this imbalance for issues such as housing, transit, and social stratification.
