Welcome to Rancho Santa Fe, where the per capita income is $113,132. 'It's Beverly Hills in the country.'
"The success of Rancho Santa Fe as a community for the rich began with its failure as a tree farm for the Santa Fe Railway. Before World War I, the railroad planted thousands of eucalyptus trees on what had largely been barren, rolling hills. But towering eucalyptus timber proved unsuitable for railroad ties. That plan went bust. Today, long, winding driveways lead to Spanish, Mediterranean and ranch-style homes (median value: $1.7 million) on minimum two-acre lots. Horse corrals and garages packed with vintage cars are common."
