Despite the slow economy, sales of new homes hit a record high last year.

"Sales of new homes rose 5.7 percent in December and set a record for the year, the government said today, as the housing sector registered a stunning performance despite the economic recession... New homes sold last month at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 946,000, up from a revised 895,000 pace in November, the Commerce Department said. Analysts had expected a 1 percent decline."
