"The New York City street is the social contract of modern democracy inscribed in space, the place where the Statue of Liberty's promise is fulfilled... Last weekend, the police barricades on my street strained against the crush of gawkers...What if the temporary became permanent?... Alas, the deceptive practices of mall designers have been increasingly adopted by planners and architects in the older urban centers... Until the complex relationship of public and private is sorted out, it is premature to talk about what should or shouldn't be built at ground zero."
