A private resident in Maine is acquiring one acre after another in hopes of assembling a new national park.
"Quimby and others who support the park say it would boost tourism and rejuvenate the troubled regional economy. Moreover, they point out, it would cover just one-fifth of the state's 17 million acres of commercial forestland. The Maine Woods, a region in northern and eastern Maine, is dotted with lakes and laced by trout streams draining rugged peaks. It's home to bears, moose, and the endangered lynx. The proposed 3.2 million-acre park would be larger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined, and encompass more than a thousand miles of hiking trails."
