After a 17 year legal battle, commuter rail service will return to the South Shore
Massachusetts gives the green light for commuter rail service to return to the 17.4 mile long Greenbush Line. Many residents along the route though fought against the rail service believing it would bring more development. Transportation officials disagreed and service should return by the spring of 2005. "The ruling, by Environmental Affairs Secretary Robert Durand, would allow the estimated $408 million project to proceed, restoring service between Boston and the coastal suburbs for the first time since 1959.Transportation officials, lawmakers, and advocates who say the 17.4-mile line that terminates in Scituate is crucial to a booming, car-choked region lauded the decision."
