Redevopment plans for the closed South Weynouth Naval Air Station call for it to be a "self-sufficient village with housing and parks, as accessible by commuter rail as by car.""The $700 million plan would transform the largest piece of undeveloped land in the Boston area, covering 1,450 acres just 12 miles south of the city. The onetime base for submarine-spotting dirigibles would become a virtual new town in the fast-growing South Shore, with 700 units of housing, 3.5 million square feet of office and retail space, and 10,000 jobs, officials say."
