While almost no one was watching, the Legislature yesterday adjourned for the fourth time this year - once again without approving a statewide plan to fix Washington's worsening transportation crisis.
"At the end of each of this year's failed transportation efforts in the Legislature, [Gov] Locke and legislative leaders said their negotiators would keep working on a solution." Residents in the Puget Sound region, where motorists face some of the nation's worst traffic, won't be receiving help any time soon due to the breakdown in the state house over the a massive transportation-tax package that would have helped pay for billions of dollars' worth of road, rail, transit and ferry improvements. At stake is the region's economic prosperity, and local business leaders are rallying to take the issue directly to the voters via an initiative in hopes of finding a solution.
