Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, the Valley's second-largest park, is proposed to be converted to wetlands to filter sewage.
Home owners, city officials and environmentalists are intensely debating the conversion of 300 acres of the southern California park into wetlands to remove nitrates from sewage before it goes into the Los Angeles River. Opponents have concern about the loss of recreational space, mosquitoes and odors. Advocates of the plan say that creation of the wetlands will create wildlife habitat and provide educational opportunities for residents, in addition to providing cleaner water discharged to the Los Angeles River.
