Mass Transit Use Growing Faster Than Highway Driving

While the number of miles driven on U.S. roads remained steady last year, the number of passengers riding buses or trains rose to the highest level since 1959.

"More Americans are leaving the driving to someone else." Officials credit the public's willingness abandon their cars and rush hour traffic for to use reliable and convenient mass transportation. "While it may be too soon to say that Americans' love affair with the automobile is over, another suitor has clearly entered the picture," said Roy Kienitz, executive director of the Surface Transportation Policy Project, a coalition of public interest and professional organizations that supports alternatives to building new roads.
