Though the last few decades have seen rapid suburban sprawl, several North Shore communities are embarking on redevelopment projects to put life back into older neighborhoods and rescue failing downtowns.
"Some towns have even begun the process of creating downtowns they never had, developing from scratch the same environments that older cities are trying to bring back. In either case, the goal is to get the most use out of the least land. Revitalizing downtown areas is the most popular form of redevelopment. In a roundabout evolution, a new generation of planners and residents has discovered that downtown is the center of the community."
