Turning Strip Malls To Housing Villages

Orange and L.A. Counties are running out of land for housing. The solution? Some advocate changing strip malls to homes.

Some commercial centers are dying and their land is becoming a blight for the area. The Planning Center in Costa Mesa is looking to convert these old strip malls into villages, where parking would be above the stores and homes and parks would be scattered within the area. Critics say that this is not a practical plan on major arteries, and want the areas configured into pedestrian-friendly thoroughfares, resembling European cities.
