The battle over building a World War II memorial in Washington D.C. has taken longer that the war itself.
"The turf war is over one of the most visible and hallowed pieces of territory in America: 7.4 acres of the Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument... Supporters argue that the veterans of the most destructive war deserve a memorial to celebrate their patriotism, valor, sacrifice and morality before they die -- and they die at a rate of 1,100 a day... Opponents, some of whom joined in a lawsuit in federal court accusing the government of violating federal law and procedures, counter that the memorial will destroy the Mall, damage the environment and trample on important legal rights."
