The FBI is teaming up with the Tennessee Valley Authority to crack downon houseboat polluters along TVA waters.
A survey of one lake indicatesthat more than 7 million gallons of untreated human waste could be flowinginto TVA lakes and rivers in eastern Tennessee alone, according to theAssociated Press. The solution includes a multi-agency federal and state programcombining incentives and tougher law enforcement. The TVA offers rebatesfor houseboat owners willing to sign on with commercial waste pumping services.Penalties for the uncooperative include up to a year in jail and $100,000 infines. Boaters have until May 30 to avoid the crackdown. State andfederal laws both ban the discharge of human waste into waters, but the lawshave rarely been enforced.
