The California Air Resources Board ( http://www.arb.ca.gov/ )approved changes to strengthen an incentive plan to reduce pollutantsfrom the air. The Carl Moyer Memorial Air Quality Standards AttainmentProgram reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to ozone andthus smog, and as a secondary benefit also reduces particulate matterfrom the air. The program achieves these reductions by funding the costof cutting diesel engine emissions below current regulations throughgrants distributed by the state's local air pollution control districts.By helping fund the purchase of natural gas transit and school buses andelectric forklifts, among other projects, the program reduced NOxemissions by about 4 tons per day and particle matter emissions by about100 pounds per day during its first year. There is currently more demandfor Moyer grants than available funding.
