The League of Women Voters ( http://www.ca.lwv.org ) recentlyhosted a debate on Alameda County's Measures C and D, two competinggrowth control initiatives. The debate centered mostly around a proposedhousing development in North Livermore, which would be outside thegrowth boundary proposed by Measure D, but which could be approved underMeasure C. Opponents of Measure D felt that the initiative will pushdevelopment into the Central Valley or at higher densities into existingcities, with negative environmental and social impacts. Archer Futch,former Livermore Mayor and supporter of Measure D, argued that buildingat higher densities would mean less increase in traffic in the area.Supporters of the two measures also disagreed about which measure woulddo more to protect agriculture and open space.
