With the support of the National Water Research Institute, theOrange County Water District will begin an experiment using fish to testthe quality of Santa Ana River water. The upper Santa Ana Riverwatershed, the main source of water replenishment for Orange County'sgroundwater basin, will be tested for various water conditions includingoxygen levels. Called the Biomonitoring Demonstration Project, theexperiment will monitor the well-being and growth of two types of fishthat are exposed to both the Santa Ana River test water anddechlorinated tap water, which will serve as the control water. The OCWDasserts that if the experiment is a success, the additional source ofwater-quality data will ensure the long-term quality and safety ofOrange County's groundwater supplies.
