"California's current economic prosperity and high quality of life make it one of the most desirable places to live, work and raise a family. That said, communities across the state are experiencing the impact of this growth with frustrating increases in traffic, a severe lack of affordable housing, and the disappearance of precious open space. At the same time, communities are bracing themselves for the over 12 million new residents that will make the Golden State their home during the next twenty years. To deal with these issues, local leaders and community based organizations in regions needing long term investment in infrastructure, land use planning that integrates environmental, economic, and equity issues, and a governance system with greater accountability have taken to the initiative process to remedy these growing pains."Press release discusses a sampling of local initiatives
