The U.S. Senate recently approved legislation seeking to create a national drought policy to improve drought preparedness, mitigation and response efforts. It is estimated that drought conditions have a $6 billion economic impact annually.
"The legislation, which was co-authored by U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-NM, authorizes $81 million to establish the National Integrated Drought Information System within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to improve national drought preparedness. The Act is intended to create reliable and timely drought forecasts and assessments so that decision makers can prepare for anticipated droughts."
