A recently released safety report on bicycling in New York City is pushing local departments to establish more than 240 miles of new bike lanes in the city.
The report on bicycling in Manhattan revealed that more than 3,400 bicyclist injuries had occurred in last 10 years, not including 225 fatalities. In response, the city's Department of Transportation and Parks Department have announced the establishment of more than 240 miles of bike lanes and increased signage in the city in the hopes that both drivers and bikers will be more cautious.
"The safety study concluded that all but one of the 225 fatalities occurred outside bike lanes and 97 percent involved riders who were not wearing helmets."
