Chicago's Inner-City Industrial Development

Under the right circumstances, inner-city industrial development can find a market.

Goose Island, a 146-acre industrial area in the North Branch of the Chicago River about 1.5 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, is no stranger to economic change. Once primarily residential, the island became exclusively industrial as water-borne and, later, rail-based commerce shaped Chicago’s economy. As late as the mid-1970s, even in the face of interstate highway development and economic decentralization, it continued to prosper.
