Kern County wins Ford Foundation award for retailing used motor oil.

Kern County was awarded $20,000 and is a finalist for the Ford Foundation'sInnovations in American Government Award sponsored by Harvard University forits recycling program that re-sells used motor oil. The county collects 30,000gallons of oil per year and re-refines it for retail sale. After convincinglocal race drivers to use it, a market was created, and the county no longerfinds as much oil in illegal dumps.
