The Nature Conservancy has transfered 8,500 acres on the east end of Santa Cruz Island to the National Park Service.
The formal transfer of 8,500 acres on the east end of Santa Cruz Island from The Nature Conservancy to the National Park Service was completed , opening a scenic harbor and some mountainous terrain to the public. The gift by the conservancy, an international nonprofit group, more than doubles the land under Park Service ownership on Santa Cruz to 14,733 acres, or 24 percent of the island. The remaining 46,000 acres are owned by the conservancy.
