A Tree Grows In Northern Liberties

A community garden and park on a former brownfield has enriched a neighborhood.

The former site of a blighted tannery and toxic chemical spills from discarded electrical transformers, a small area renamed Liberty Lands has given new meaning to a community. The Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association (NLNA) has taken ownership of the property, and thanks to some creative fundraising and debt relaxation from a local politician, the group has transformed the brownfield into a park, garden and playground.
