"Once one of Berkeleys most vibrant black communities, West Berkeley is now losing its black residents, according to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau and local real estate experts...Gentrification, the renovation of deteriorated urban property by the affluent or middle-class which often results in displacement of lower-income people, has played a significant role in the decline...Elderly black homeowners who still reside in West Berkeley see some advantages of gentrification, claiming that increasing property values make them want to stay."
