In places like Fairfax County (VA), Portland, San Francisco, New York, and parts of Los Angeles, the growth of Internet companies (dot-coms) is causing an array of urban planning problems. Many residents blame local politicians and planners who they feel have rolled out the red carpet for Internet companies without considering the impacts. This feature-length article examines how some dot-com companies are working with local governments to make things better, and how the concepts of smart growth are being used to manage Internet growth.
