A new Road Safety Strategy was recently adopted by the Atlanta Regional Commission with a promise to create “a comprehensive framework and action plan to support the long-term safety vision and goals” of the region.
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has adopted a new Road Safety Strategy (RSS) to establish a new path toward Vision Zero goals for the 11-county Atlanta Region.
Traffic safety in the Atlanta region breaks down on racial and economic lines, like it does in many other parts of the country, with communities of color and low-income communities facing disparate impacts from traffic safety outcomes.
John Ruch reports the RSS for the SaprtaReport. “The RSS describes the traditional approach as reactive, uncoordinated and often prioritizing traffic movement over safety,” writes Ruch. “The report calls for an approach that is systemic, coordinates all modes of travel, and prioritizes safety.”
As briefly noted in the article, the RSS proposes an approach based on the “Safe System” model, which accounts for human error and limitation in the design and engineering of transportation infrastructure.
