The Beyer Park project in San Ysidro and Sweetwater Park development in Chula Vista each received $5 million grants from the U.S. Department of the Interior.
In 2014, Congress established the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) Program to help economically disadvantaged communities address outdoor recreation deficits by supporting projects in urban areas that create new outdoor recreation spaces, reinvigorate existing parks, and form connections between people and the outdoors. The program is administered by the National Park Service (NPS) under the authority of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Act.
As reported by Matt Meyer with Fox 5 News, two park projects in San Diego have been awarded funding through the ORLP Program: the Beyer Park project in San Ysidro and Sweetwater Park development in Chula Vista. Each park is getting $5 million in grant funds. The 8-acre Beyer Park will feature a dog park, a skate park, a playground, ball fields, walking trails and picnic areas. Sweetwater Park will be a 21-acre passive park with meadows, specialty gardens and grasslands dotted with picnic areas and connected through walking and bicycle paths. Both parks will help to improve park access for underserved communities and offer amenities desired by residents.
