Bike Lane Debate Continues in San Antonio

As a project to re-engineer Broadway in San Antonio continues, questions about where to put bike lanes persist.

Iris Dimmick reports: "After months of debate, will the City of San Antonio add protected bike lanes to the final designs of a major street project in the urban core? The short answer is: only if the issue can land before the full Council – and only if a majority wants it."

A September 16 meeting of the City Council punted on the question, sending the ball back into the court of Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Councilmember Shirley Gonzales, according to Dimmick.

The city is working on a three-mile-long improvement project on Broadway, and bike plans are included along most the route, but engineers don't believe there is enough space to add physical barriers to the lane.
