A continuous coastal hiking trail traversing the entire length of California is 60% complete.
"The state Coastal Trail, now 60 percent complete, would traverse the entire length of the state, from the temperate rain forests of the Oregon border to the deserts of Mexico. It would take hikers across beaches and bluffs, bays and coves, staying as near the ocean as possible. Today, the trail relies mostly on routes through parks and other public lands. But if the dream of a continuous right-of-way is ever to be realized, it must win the cooperation of private landowners ranging from rural timber companies to wealthy coastal residents."
