Ridership on the TANK bus service has sunk in recent years. Hope for a turnaround ride on a redesign.

Like many bus services around the country, the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) is losing riders. Officials aim to change that trend by redesigning routes and bus frequency. The service saw big drops in ridership in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Changes in commuters' destinations and competition from ride share services have cut into the number of people riding the bus system.
TANK re-evaluates its service periodically, but officials say ridership losses have made the current redesign (still in its early phases) particularly impactful. "The goals of the redesign are to increase ridership – or, at the very least, stop the losses – boost efficiency and address demographic and job shifts, so buses are taking people from where they live to where they want to go, reports Hannah K. Sparling. Officials hope that adjusting routes to fit the changing geography of work in the region will keep TANK from tanking.
