The Housing Authority of New Orleans is trying to deliver more affordable housing units by throwing a few market-rate units into the deal.
"Properties in Algiers, the Upper 9th Ward and Uptown will be turned into mixed-income housing under proposals recently approved by the Housing Authority of New Orleans," reports Jessica Williams.
In total, the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) approved more than 600 units of new housing, with 90 percent of that total designated for residents who earn too little to afford market rate housing.
The proposed developments also represent a new direction in affordable housing policy in New Orleans. "The plans are part of HANO’s ongoing strategy to break up concentrated areas of poverty by turning former public housing complexes into developments that offer market-rate units as well as low-income housing," according to Williams.
