The U.S. Green Building Council launched the LEED for Cities program in 2016.

"Chicago and San Jose, CA both have achieved LEED for Cities platinum certification," reports Katie Pyzyk.
The certification follows grants awarded earlier this year to the cities by the U.S. Green Building Council to provide "financial support, educational resources and technical support to pursue their certifications."
"Chicago and San Jose now join the elite few cities to have achieved platinum certification in the two years since the LEED for Cities program launched," adds Pyzyk "Washington, DC and Phoenix were the first two cities to reach that status."
San José achieved its designation with a zero waste strategy, a new transit metric, and a climate plan aimed toward reducing air pollution and saving water. Chicago's merits were based on an energy reporting program for large buildings and a commitment to 100% renewable in all municipal buildings.
