The project could remove tens of thousands of commercial trucks from roadways.

A proposed automated cargo corridor linking Texas and Mexico got a boost last week after the Trump administration approved a new bridge from Laredo, Texas to Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
As Noi Mahoney explains in Freight Waves, the project is being spearheaded by a private company and would use driverless, diesel-powered shuttles on a system akin to a conveyor belt on a track to transport cargo across the new bridge. “The Green Corridors International Bridge in Laredo will be part of a corridor system stretching about 140 miles south to Monterrey.”
Despite recent tensions over tariffs and trade, Mexico remained the U.S.’s largest trading partner through the first four months of 2025. Once built, the corridor could remove tens of thousands of commercial trucks from other nearby crossings and roads. The two existing bridges at Laredo carry over 18,000 commercial trucks in both directions each day. “In addition to the bridge and cargo corridor, the Green Corridors project will also create new inland cargo ports in Laredo and Monterrey, which will handle loading and unloading the freight vehicles.”
