St. Louis University is helping stabilize the neighborhood located near its medical campus—instead of expanding the campus into property it owns around the campus, it is building houses to sell.
"St. Louis University is planning to build homes for sale on 43 grassy lots scattered among existing houses just east of its medical campus on Grand Avenue," reports Corinne Ruff.
"The university acquired the properties in the Gate District neighborhood over the course of decades. In some cases it tore down deteriorating structures," adds Ruff. "Now, its development arm is working closely with the neighborhood association to build the homes."
The homes are just one component of redevelopment plans for the land located around the university's campuses. Ruff details the other plans in the works, including the City Foundry mixed-use project, which will add local eateries and a movie theater.
