The busiest airport in the world may also become a center for aviation innovation.
The city of Atlanta is hoping to develop an innovation center at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. An RFP from the airport indicates a vision for a "virtual and physical" hub for accelerating new technologies in the international aviation industry.
Already, Hartsfield-Jackson is a member of the American Association of Airport Executives’ Airport Innovation Accelerator, Kelly Yamanouchi notes in the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Building its own innovation lab would bring it into the ranks of cities like San Diego and Munich. In 2014, the city launched the development of "Airport City," a plan to add a cluster of commercial destinations and an upscale hotel outside the domestic terminal.
